A number of musical instruments are related to Hindustani traditional music. The veena, a string instrument, was generally viewed as the most significant, however, few play it today and it has to a great extent been supplanted by its cousins the sitar and the sarod, the two of which owe their starting point to Persian impacts. Among bowed instruments, the sarangi, esraj (or dilruba) and violin are famous. The bansuri (bamboo flute), shehnai and harmonium are imperative to wind instruments.
