Service Description

Oxycodone, also known as OxyContin (and on the street as “Oxy,” “OC,” and “Oxycotton”), is a potent painkiller that is commonly prescribed to individuals who are struggling with moderate-to-severe pain. Oxycodone is a Schedule II narcotic and is legally available only through a prescription from a physician. Unfortunately, a substantial amount is diverted and sold on the streets due to the euphoric high it produces by stimulating the reward center of the brain. Oxycodone works by elevating the neurotransmitter dopamine, or “the pleasure chemical of the brain,” similar to the effects of heroin.

Individuals who abuse oxycodone typically do so in one of three manners: through IV injection, snorting, or chewing. These methods can drastically increase the risk for overdose. They were also once able to defeat the extended-release coating on the pills; however, as of September 2013, oxycodone was reformulated to make crushing the tablets a challenge— to discourage abuse of this potent narcotic.

Many individuals who abuse oxycodone also abuse other substances. Some opt to combine it with benzodiazepines or alcohol to further the high. This combination can be particularly deadly as it easily leads to respiratory depression. Some individuals use oxycodone with stimulants such as amphetamines, cocaine, or meth to reduce undesired side effects. These combinations can lead to heart attack and stroke.
The symptoms of oxycodone addiction will vary among individuals. Symptoms will depend on many factors including length of addiction, frequency of use, and amount used. Symptoms common to oxycodone abuse include: depression, euphoria, anxiety, mood swings, irritability, drowsiness, dizziness, itching, nausea and vomiting, constipation, pupillary constriction, low blood pressure, respiratory depression, headache, sweating, dry mouth, hallucinations, paranoia and delusions, track marks on arms and legs, lying to others about amount used, borrowing or stealing pills or money from loved ones, visiting several doctors to obtain multiple prescriptions, forging prescriptions, neglecting responsibilities at work or home, and strained interpersonal relationships.

With addiction, nearly every aspect of the individual’s life is affected. Long-term oxycodone abuse often results in: loss of relationships, divorce, child and domestic abuse, job loss, homelessness, liver damage, breathing irregularity, respiratory failure, seizures, heart attack, coma, and death.
